Daman and Diu

General information

Daman and Diu is one of the Union Territories in India. Daman and Diu is an enclave on the Western Coast of India. Daman and Diu were administered as a part of Goa until 1987. Later after Goa was granted statehood, Daman and Diu were declared as a Union Territory. As part of the sea coast of Daman and Diu during the early years was occupied by Portuguese, the language is still in use in these places. Though Gujarati is the main official language of the Union Territory, about 10% of the residents speak Portuguese. It is also to be mentioned that the Portuguese language is slowly vanishing with the elders as it is not an official language nor it is being taught in schools. Daman is famous for its scenic beauty, beach, churches and the Portuguese architecture. The twin cities of Nana Daman and Moti Daman are well known for their scenic beauty. Diu is a remote island lying on the South East coast of Gujarat. The specialty of the place is the old Portuguese cathedral.
